Looking at Ralph Mnn's letters, I have found ref to a book - Barrett's memories of Old Stow 1891, which you might be able to get through the library. There is, apparently, a reference to the repewing of Stow church in 1845-7 - R Gillett, Farm Bailiff to JC Chamberlayne Esq, Maugersbury Manor £5, T Gillett 5/-d.

Ah. this looks promising RM continues: The first three trustees to the Stow Water Supply in 1871 were Cox, Bullock and William Gillett, and Wm attended their first meeting on 6 July 1872.

The Fire brigade Committee on 26 May 1874 included R Gillett and W Gillett. Wm Gillett b Maungersbury 1846, m Mary (b Stow 1850). Their three eldest children, Wm E, Alfred j and Mary Clara all born at Maungersbury in 1869, 1871 and 18 72. The family then moved to Kingham where cecil James was born in 1877 and Albert John in 1880. Grace Violet was b Stow 1880, da of Richard Gillett of Stow, m Kingham on 29 May 1907 to Wm George Fawdry.

In 1869 a new building was created with a custom built Masonic Temple. Perhaps unsurprisingly this new home for Masonry in Stow had a connection to beer. Half way down Sheep Street stood the Victoria Brewery. The brewery was built around the time of Queen Victoria’s accession in 1837. Thomas Clifford was a local stone mason and is known to have been involved in its construction. It is now “Brewery Yard” with its shops.

The main brewery office still stands on the main road and is now a book shop. It is quite an interesting building and unique in Stow. It is, in the main part, built of local Cotswold stone, but the front is faced with flint stones. No one knows where the flints come from or why it was decided to dress the building in this stone. The brewery office was built by Richard and William Gillett in 1869. The brewery office was built with offices downstairs and a Masonic Temple on the upper floor.

Prince of Wales continued meeting at this Lodge for a number of years. And in 1876 William Gillett was Worshipful Master. POW continued to use the building until 1894. The Victoria Brewery closed in December 1913, due to competition any rising costs.

A Richard Gillett is named in the Banbury sessions (employee stole from him). More likely to be the draper who married Lydia Smith?
