A brief encounter with my Suffolk cousins.
October 2007

Caroline's grandmother aged 100The October edition leads with a collection of memories of members' grandparents. The theme was inspired by a thread within the Community Boards which was started by OurEm. Other members were approached to expand on their contributions to the thread.

We have articles from Olde Crone Holden and Merry Monty Montgomery who tell us about some of their more unusual connections in their Family Tree as well as Joy Dean's story about visiting her ancestral roots in Suffolk.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been sending in ideas for articles and to those people who have started threads and made contributions to the threads which have grown into magazine articles. When we started this project, we were worried about whether we would be able to produce issues as often as monthly, yet we are already planning as far ahead as March!!

Please keep the ideas and stories coming - there will be space for them all ...

Abiding memories of our grandparents
Precious Jewels

I had always been slightly envious of my husband in that his grandmother was still alive and all my grandparents had died when I was a child. My memories of my maternal grandad, especially, were very dear to me and, although I don’t have many, the memories I do have I treasure, like small nuggets of priceless jewels. Sadly two weeks ago, my husband’s grandmother died. It was a sad time of reflection for us both, my husband for the pas

Early Memories

One of my first memories was of my great grandma on my dad's side. She lived with my gran and grandad and she used to look after me for a while, when my parents and grandparents were at work, before I started school. She used to always give me Shredded Wheat for my breakfast and I thought she was trying to feed me straw! Every day she would give me Dairylea cheese spread butties for my lunch. No wonder I don't eat them now, I must have ha

I still miss them loads

My paternal grandfather died when I was 5 years old, but I can still remember the smell of his pipe to this day. My memories of him are feelings of gentleness and of his twinkling eyes. Although I can't really remember the physical him, it's the essence of him I remember with love and a feeling of being loved.

My paternal grandmother died when I was about 22 years old. She had a very English accent which I now know was Bristol lingo, but

Horniman's Tea ~ A Right Royal Drink!
Horniman’s Tea - A Right Royal Drink! Horniman’s Tea - A Right Royal Drink!

Contrary to present day opinion, the British have not always been a nation of tea drinkers, but since we adopted the habit we’ve become quite enthusiastic about this beverage! Perhaps it was a liking for tea that encouraged me in my search for the origins of The Horniman Tea Company.

I first became aware of the name Horniman in connection with my family history research, when I received a copy of the marriage certificate for my great-great grandparents, Charles Henry Buck and Mary Smith, dated 26th October 1858. I was so surprised that the marriage had taken place in a register office rather than at a Quaker Meeting, that at first I didn’t take in the names of the witnesses, one of whom was, 'John Horniman'. As the name was familiar, I asked my mother if she knew who he was. ”Oh, that will be the Quaker tea merchant” she replied. Excited by the idea that John Horniman might be THE tea merchant, and that this man seemed to have a connection with our famil

Quack Doctor, Astrologist and Conjurer
The Mad Magician

This article is a testament to the 'team' on Family Tree Forum. From a tiny snippet of vague information which I offered, they unravelled this intriguing tale of a man who rose from unpromising beginnings, to become one of the most feted members of the Magic Circle, who was styled 'the queen's magician' and performed before Queen Victoria and her court at many private gatherings.

Many years ago, whilst constructing a hobby tree, I came across a book which made reference to a James Holden. The information was brief, and vague: 'James Holden....who went to Birmingham, where he became a quack doctor, astrologist and conjurer'.

There was only the vaguest timescale, which placed this man's birth in the late 1700s. I left it for years, thinking this would be a fruitless search. Tying up some loose ends recently, I came across this piece of information again and without much hope, I posted on the site's Research Board.

A brief encounter with my Suffolk cousins
A brief encounter with my Suffolk cousins.

History was one of my favourite subjects at school and still fascinates me. I also find people fascinating. From reading about history and watching people it seemed a natural progression to investigate the structure of my family. Not just names and dates but learning how they lived, what was happening historically, social conditions, and geographically, where they fitted into the world. I should have started much earlier while my parents and grandparents were alive. My parents died in 1983 and 1987 and my grandparents died in 1969, 1971, 1980 and 1982.  I knew three were born in London and the other in Buckinghamshire.

When the time came to start searching the General Register Office's (GRO) birth, marriage and death indexes for the marriages of my great grandparents the fun began in earnest. My husband and I travelled to London for the first of several visits to the Family Records Centre, where we experienced the excitement of finding people, the backache after
